I’m a 31-year-old man living in Richmond, Virginia during the gilded age of beer. And I don’t drink beer.
It was a few years ago that I found myself drinking less and less beer, or more accurately, less alcohol altogether. My life circumstances were not offering me too many drinking opportunities to drink while married, welcoming two daughters and the building of a business. My hangovers were more of a nuisance and the other associated costs just became more additions to the ledger that didn’t support my cause for beer consumption.
Somehow that developed into shifting away from beer altogether.
It was what beer lovers would call a downward spiral. I drink less beer so I lose the taste for it and so I drink less beer. I found myself avoiding beer altogether because I was no longer enjoyable.
Fast-forward two solid years without a single drop of beer and here I am bar side, trying to rekindle a flame that has burned out completely.
A happily married father watching my two incredible girls grow, I find myself in a new world, in many ways.
But as I observe from across the room, I see a friend taking in his first sip of an ice cold pint and I’m instantly transported. It’s then I remember the days when my thirst was quenched with a delicious craft brew. The complex flavors, the effervescence, the cold finish and comfortable buzz. It was a fantastic experience and one I miss.
I now find myself laughing at where to begin again.
With limited opportunities, excuses, or events to drink beer, what’s a man to do?
How can I reintroduce myself to reclaim the love of this incredible beverage once again?
Should I try returning to the beers that I once loved?
Should I drink the beers that I first started drinking?
Should I start with what the industry would describe as an “easy drinking” beer?
Or should I leave the drink in the past and embrace this beer-less life moving forward?
I’m thirty. What should I order?
