"Having multiple organizations come together for the common goal of raising money and awareness for a great cause is what we love about this industry. Having Virginia Craft Brews on board to assist with promotions was paramount in making sure the charity's message was received by the largest audience possible. We are grateful for both Virginia Craft Brews as well as Girls for a Change for contributing to our local community."
Center of the Universe Brewing Co
On December 16, 2017, Center of the Universe Brewing, in partnership with the Virginia Craft Brews Publication held a COTU Christmas market at the brewery to raise awareness for the Girls for A Change non-profit. The event was promoted through the publication with information about Girls for a Change throughout as well as a story about the brewery. Wonderful tunes from Jim Fab and Jim Jones filled the air, playing renditions of all your favorite holiday songs on Jazz Guitar and Jazz Trumpet. A great crowd got into the holiday spirit and took care of some last minute shopping. Here are a few of the wonderful local vendors who sold products: CapWorks, Wand and Wear for DK Designs, Gifted RVA, Nicole Gomez Art, Camelot Pewter, Liberatus Jewelry, Cricket Cove Soap Co., Earbobs by Amy, Esoshare, Lularoe by Becca Reeser, & Shinnamon & Sugar. Impeccable holiday comfort food was served up by Capitol Waffle Shop ! We had the chicken and waffle special and did not speak a word while it was devoured! Most importantly, 10% of all beer sales, and 100% of all the vendor fees were donated to Girls For A Change!
About the Charity
Girls For A Change (GFAC) is a national organization that empowers girls to create social change.
Girls For A Change’s flagship programs take multiple approaches to stimulate, nurture, and challenge this empowerment. For example, GFAC’s youngest flagship program, “DATE WITH DAD” emerged from its oldest flagship program, “Girl Action Teams (GAT).
Date With Dad Weekend: A time to for girls to tie the knot of healthy relationships starting with their fathers or father figures...with fun, education and celebration!
Camp Diva: Where girls learn to be self-advocates, cultural explorers and adventurers in the heart of their city.
Diva-Preneurship: Girls earn personal Crowns of Victory thanks to their business acumen and financial literacy.
Girl Action Team: Giving birth to Social Change Agents and Girl Ambassadors who know what they want to change and learn how to change it!
Story about the Charity featured in Issue #15
In June 2016, as one of 10 women in the nation selected as a White House Champion of Change for Extracurricular Enrichment for Marginalized Girls, Angela Patton, CEO of Girls For A Change (GFAC), and Founder of GFAC’s Camp DIVA (Leadership Academy) reflected on the growth of Girls For A Change over the past 15 years as an intentional advocate and engineer of fundamental change for Black girls and other girls of color in our community. Her work preceded much of the research reflecting the status of urban Black girls in our country. That data now verifies that Black girls and other girls of color are still uniquely challenged by persistent opportunity gaps, structural barriers, and implicit biases; the important stimulus for GFAC’s approach to be deliberately designed to “Prepare Black girls to the world, and Prepare the World to Black girls.” Recent data continues to confirm that girls of color are still falling behind academically and underrepresented in many careers including STEM fields. They remain invisible to the mainstream rendering their intellect, problem-solving, leadership capabilities, and their potential unutilized. GFAC, in collaboration with a diverse coterie of kindred spirits and partners, directly confronts these barriers with skill-building, mentoring, social-emotional wellness training, tutoring, experiences, exposure, transportation support, and access to 21st-century academic and career opportunities. Now in their own space, serving girls from grades 1-12, the GFAC Center-Chesterfield is home base for GFAC’s work of “cutting a path to the mainstream” for the future leaders of our community.
